Woolsthorpe Wellies - Our Manufacturers

Recognised as one of the finest manufacturers in the world of rubber wellies (and quality clothing), Aigle started its humble beginnings in 1853. Hiram Hutchinson bought the patent from Charles Goodyear for vulcanised latex allowing him to manufacture waterproof clothes, shoes and boots on a large scale. Hutchinson then set up The Flexible Rubber Company, based in Montargis in north-central France, and branded his goods “A L’Aigle” as a tribute to the American Bald Eagle.

The company went from strength to strength, following trends and fashions through the decades. 1968 saw production start in the Chatellerault factory of the Bison welly, the first designed and produced there and a welly that is still extremely popular today. In the 1970’s Aigle introduced the sailing boot, blue with two white stripes, which were a huge success that continues to this day, worn by sailors worldwide.

The Parcours range of wellies emerged in 1996, the first to marry the hiking shoe sole with a top quality rubber boot. These superb wellies revolutionised the approach to rubber boots, creating the best-selling range of country sports rubber wellies in Europe and forming the bedrock of the Aigle rubber boot market that flourishes to this day.

Aigle now produces 4000 pairs of wellies each day using 750 tons of rubber per year, rubber sourced from natural rubber resin rather than that which is petro-chemical based. This is feeding a worldwide market from their factory in France and includes Woolsthorpe Wellies!

The consistent quality, superb comfort and durability make Aigle wellies a brand that Woolsthorpe Wellies could not be without!

Possibly the best known brand of country sports wear in the UK, Le Chameau produces a fine range of handmade natural rubber and leather wellies and country clothing.

From its beginnings in northern France over 80 years ago, Le Chameau have created an instantly recognisable premium quality range of wellies, manufactured from quality rubber derived from the Hevea, a native tree of tropical Amazonia.

Launched by a young Frenchman, M. Claude Chamot (pronounced ‘Chameau’) in 1927, he manufactured a range of boots from natural crepe, recognising its qualities of comfort and flexibility as well as the waterproof nature of the material. A plant was opened in 1939 in the centre of Normandy, and the St Hubert boot was created in 1950. This welly, with its leather lining, is still produced today to order and pre-empted the Le Chameau Chasseur wellies, the flagship of today’s Le Chameau wellies range. 1959 saw the opening of the plant in Chateauvillain in north-eastern France.

Master craftsmen have gone on to produce one of the finest ranges of wellies in the world today with over 500,000 pairs per year entering the market. A range of models is available for both men and women, ensuring you can find the Le Chameau boot that best suits your lifestyle and activity.

Bucking the traditional trend of all-rubber welly boots, The Original Muck Boot Company launched in 1999 in the USA, with the aim of producing the most comfortable and high performance waterproof footwear on the market.

The range is in constant development, with over 40 styles available in the USA covering workwear, equine, gardening, walking, agriculture and outdoor sports to name but a few! The range of wellies is slightly reduced in the UK but is nonetheless robust and extremely popular, combining the warmth of neoprene with the durability of natural rubber. To confuse everybody, Muck Boots are named differently in the UK, all taking the names of British rivers!

The quality, comfort and warmth of Muck Boots makes The Original Muck Boot Company’s welly line the fastest growing in the waterproof welly market today and has produced some of Woolsthorpe Wellies best-sellers! Accept no imitations - get the Original!

One of the best known and trusted brands of country clothing for hunting and general outdoor pursuits, Seeland is also the largest supplier of hunting and outdoor equipment in Europe. It therefore was inevitable that they would launch a range of wellies, which they did in 2009.

Initially Woolsthorpe Wellies took their Rainmaster boots for ladies and gents, which has proved to be popular and extremely hardwearing.

We have no doubt that we will be increasing our range of Seeland boots in the future now that they have been tested by our trusty customers!

Grub's

This relatively unknown brand in the UK has been producing quality sporting goods for over 200 years. Manufacturing their unique range of wellies alongside Muck Boots since 2003, Grub's concentrate their high performance wellies on the country sporting market; principally shooting and fishing, although our customers have proved that these boots can be used just about anywhere!

Their approach alongside the well known and respected Vibram® sole units give their Stalker and Ptarmigan boots the edge over other warm neorpene-based wellies.
